‘Another feather in Dutchman’s cap!’ F1 2021 champion, Max Verstappen claims Autosport’s International Racing Driver of the Year Award

The world champion, Max Verstappen has started off the year in style after he receives the Autosport’s International Racing Driver of the Year Award. The award doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone as the driver’s performances throughout the year have been nothing but mesmerizing.
Just like he pipped Hamilton for the drivers’ championship, the story was no different here. The other two contenders for the award were IndyCar champion Alex Palou and Formula E title winner Nyck de Vries.
The announcement of the victory was done on the 6th of February at the Autosport awards, which was held at Grosvenor House on Park Lane which was an online-only competition due to the pandemic.
“First of all, I would like to say a big thank for you to all the fans for voting for me to win this award. All the support over the year was amazing,” said Verstappen who wasn’t present at hand to accept the award but had sent a video to thank the fans.
“I would like to thank Red Bull and Honda for giving me the car to win the world championship,” said Verstappen, as quoted by Autosport.

The very proud Red Bull boss Christian Horner accepted the award on behalf of Verstappen, further added “Obviously he has developed and matured over the last few years. The way he drove last year was outstanding and to go up against Lewis Hamilton who was at the top of his game.”
“Max led more laps than any other driver and won more races, he thoroughly deserves this award,” Horner continued.
One of the most historic seasons was a roller coaster of emotions for the fans and the all the teams. But at the end of it all, nobody can the question the ability, grit and determination shown by the world champion after defeating the 7 time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
It wasn’t that he defeated a world champion who was off his prime; he defeated a world champion who was at the peak of his powers, who tested him at every corner, quite literally. The world of formula 1 has seen the emergence of Max Verstappen after the dominance of Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton.
