“Be sensible,” Daniel Ricciardo reveals McLaren’s order which stopped him from chasing Lando Norris
Daniel Ricciardo
McLaren and its drivers had a great visit in Australia as the team made a good comeback. The team finished with 18 points, thanks to Lando Norris‘ P5 and the homeboy Daniel Ricciardo‘s P6.
Ricciardo finished in under half a second behind his teammate. However, the result could’ve been a bit different, if there were no orders from the team over the radio to Daniel Ricciardo. The driver revealed that he was told to “be sensible” during the latter stage of the race. Had the orders not come in, maybe Daniel could’ve finished higher.
As quoted by Planet F1, Daniel Ricciardo said, “It looked like a bit of photo finish with me and Lando, and I was told he had a few issues towards the end, and he slowed down quite a lot. But the team said ‘be sensible,’ so I had to control myself a little bit.”
Daniel Ricciardo’s view of McLaren’s performance in Australia
The team got off to a poor start in 2022. They looked off in the first two rounds of the season but seem to have got their mojo back. While the issues remain to be resolved for them, they have improved their car significantly.
Daniel, speaking of McLaren’s performance, said, “I’m satisfied enough. It’s by far our best result of the season and team result. The first part of the race, I thought we had something for Mercedes, but as the race progressed, the gap extended.”
He concluded by saying, “P5 and P6 is still a massive result for us. If you had told me in Bahrain this would have happened I would have laughed sarcastically, so very happy with this progress.”
The papaya team had their first good weekend this year. They fared well in all the sessions in Australia. The drivers looked confident and would certainly be looking for a podium and challenging Mercedes for the third place in the constructors.
