Carlos Sainz labels old F1 cars “spiteful” and claims new cars are “innovative to the max”

As Ferrari is set to unveil their 2022 season car, Carlos Sainz has made a striking comparison. The Spaniard claims the newer cars are innovative when compared with their older counterparts. He has stated that in comparison to the new cars the old ones are “spiteful” to drive.

Ferrari will be hoping for a likely chance to claim a race victory if not the Championship. The Italian team haven’t won a Grand Prix since the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix. But the hopes are high at Maranello after a 3rd place finishes in the 2021 Constructors Championship.

The 2022 season of the Formula One World Championship is due to see an overhaul of new technical regulations as F1 is set to embark on a new “Hybrid Era”. The added aerodynamic regulations are focused on allowing for closer, more exciting racing.

In an interview with Italian publication Corriere Della Sera, Carlos Sainz was asked about the new generation of cars at Formula 1. The Spaniard said it will be “different from the machines seen in recent years. Innovative to the max.” He added, “Until last year we drove the best cars in the history of F1, well-balanced but spiteful, if you lost control for an instant, you’d crash.”

“This Ferrari seems even more responsive to me, the suspension is stiffer, we’ll have to get used to handling it. If it’s easy to drive, everything emerges faster, the lap times almost come by themselves. Then you have to compare the data with the others. I don’t think the first test in Barcelona will be enough, but in Bahrain, we’ll have some reliable information.” said Sainz

Ferrari will launch its new car, the F1-75 on February 17 from their facility in Maranello, Italy. Carlos Sainz will partner with Charles Leclerc for a second season. They are also supplying Power units to sister team Alfa Romeo and Haas F1 teams apart from their own race cars.
