“Fans who follow F1 don’t care where we race,” Toto Wolff on the progressive expansion of the F1 calendar

There has been a lot of murmuring regarding ditching the traditional tracks such as Monaco, SPA, and Mexico from the calendar, as they’re competing with the new tracks that seem to be providing more value to F1. This stirring has caused many to argue over the subject.

This all seems to have started after the third race in the United States of America, the Las Vegas GP, was announced. After the announcement, speculations, and criticisms have been in the air, as to add new tracks and attract new audiences, F1 will try to move away from the old European tracks.

Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ team principal, believes that F1’s CEO Stefano Domenicali is doing a great job for the sport. As quoted by motorsport-total, Toto said, “I think Stefano [Domenicali] is doing an excellent job of striking a balance between new, interesting venues that are not only attractive from a financial point of view but also serve to attract new audiences to develop.”

Toto Wolff’s thoughts on F1’s TV audience

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff

The Mercedes team principal said, “I think most of the fans who follow Formula 1 on TV or social media really don’t care where we race. That’s my opinion.”

He added, “Baku isn’t a traditional race, but it’s a fantastic place. So it’s important for the fans, for the local fans, to race at these iconic locations. And you can see that here [in Melbourne]: there’s great attendance .”

While Toto Wolff has shared his opinion, it does seem to be a bit considerate since the fans watching on the TV do care where the race is held. The history of a track and the relation of a track to other drivers make the races special. While the action and drama during the race are of essence for the viewers, all the growth of the sport can’t be concentrated in a particular region of the world while taking the older audiences for granted.
