Heikki Kovalainen was shocked to see Max Verstappen not as aggressive as in the past during Bahrain GP
After the 2021 season, Max Verstappen has started to be known as an aggressive driver with a lot of temper. He has always shown his anger and/or frustration in one way or another during either retirement of the car or any reason which stops him from delivering to his best potential. His aggressiveness on track is feared by his colleagues and loved by the fans all around.
During the first race of the 2022 season at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Max Verstappen’s calm and poised way of handling the overtakes and the fight took everyone by surprise. Even Heikki Kovalainen, former Finnish Formula One driver. Kovalainen saw a completely different side of the Dutchman during the Bahrain Grand Prix.
In a battle with Charles Leclerc, Kovalainen saw Max Verstappen react less aggressively after both the overtakes on Leclerc for which he took the lead for right back each time. “I think he could have crossed to the other side more aggressively and pushed Charles away or hit him,” said the Finn shocked in seeing Verstappen not reacting in that way.
Part of learning process for Max Verstappen
Heikki said the following statement as Verstappen is notoriously known for taking such risky actions in the past even though he realized that such an action would potentially be penalized by the FIA or the racing committee and concluded that there has been a change in Max over the months saying, “It wasn’t as aggressive as in the past. Maybe that’s part of the learning process with Max.
This potential change or improvement can mean a lot in terms of the driver’s racing and his behavior towards it. Even though aggressive driving is loved by all, the utmost priority is to check on the safety of the driver and these small steps can make a huge difference in the future.
