“He’ll start thinking of switching teams,” Mika Hakkinen foresees Lewis Hamilton jumping the sinking Mercedes ship
Lewis Hamilton
Mika Hakkinen believes that the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton might already be on the lookout to change teams, given how the season has progressed so far for the Briton. The two-time champion also thinks Lewis is in a tough spot, especially after the raging performances by the new driver at Mercedes, George Russell.
Mercedes currently has the third-best car on the grid. And from the W13, the performances of George and Lewis have varied tremendously. For example, George finished P5 in Saudi Arabia and currently stands second in the drivers’ championship, and Lewis barely finished in points on P10.
Speaking of how a poor start has made things hard for Lewis, Hakkinen, as quoted by racingnews365.com, said, “I wonder how Lewis behaves in the team meetings. I bet he’s sulking – I can imagine it! Lots of complaining and whining. This starts the natural thought process of drivers, ‘Should I go somewhere else?’ It’s a fact. He’s been at Mercedes for years and won multiple championships. Now that things are not going well, he’ll start thinking of switching teams.”
Troubles for Lewis Hamilton ahead as per Mika Hakkinen
Lewis Hamilton has already been put in a tough spot by George Russell. The newly arrived driver has likely cemented his place ahead of Lewis Hamilton by having strong finishes despite running the same car.
Lewis has been with Mercedes for over nine years now and is a certified legend for the team and the sport, but this doesn’t exempt him from natural human behavior. His contract expires at the end of 2023, which means there can be another season of a lesser developed car.
Lewis, as suggested by Hakkinen, might soon be on the lookout for other teams, in case things don’t appear to improve significantly. However, there have been no complaints by him and no signs of departure either.
