Helmut Marko reveals what went wrong with Red Bull in the Bahrain GP

Of what could’ve been a splendid start to their 2022 F1 campaign, Red Bull’s race in Bahrain ended in a disaster with both the drivers, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, not finishing a race due to fuel pump issue. The drivers were looking to finish in P2 and P4 respectively, but as fate would have it, they would not finish at all.

Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s advisor, while speaking to Sky Sports Germany, revealed the cause behind the failure of the cars towards the end of the race. Marko said that “both Red Bull cars had the same problem with not getting enough fuel to the engine. Verstappen also suffered from a power steering issue that might have been caused by the jack during a pit stop,” as quoted by F1 journalist Tobi Gruner.

The team’s statement has cleared that they will be investigating the issue. And hopefully, they do fix any such issues that may trouble the race in the future as well.

With both the cars not finishing the race for Red Bull, the team scored zero points in the opening weekend. Their woes increased when the rival team and drivers, Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, managed a P3 and P4 finish, just behind Ferrari’s P1 and P2 finish.

What happened with the Red Bull cars during the race?

As the Max Verstappen pitted for the third time, he went for a slow out-lap, to sustain his tires and pressurize the race leader Charles Leclerc in the later stages of the race, as the gap between the two reduced to almost nil, after Pierre Gasly’s car incident brought out the safety car. However, he complained of some issues with his car.

He was told on the radio that there’s nothing that can be done and was asked to go ahead with that current state of the car. He was heard in anger over the radio and complained of no power in the battery. As the driver approached the pitlane entry, Ferrari of Carlos Sainz, his teammate Sergio Perez and Mercedes Lewis Hamilton overtook him, and the Dutch driver went for the pits, retiring his car.

While it seemed Red Bull will be getting out some points from Sergio Perez’s P4, the driver also complained of an issue with the engine. And later, Perez’s Red Bull slipped and thus retired the car.
