The new season of F1 is beginning this weekend, and the hype for the new season has been building up since the car launches in February and was amplified exponentially by the pre-season testing rounds of Barcelona and Bahrain. Another major contributor to this was the Netflix show around F1- Drive to Survive.
Drive to Survive’s fourth season was released on the 11th of March, just shy of a week to the first racing weekend, being held in Bahrain. And the show has received a tremendous reception from fans worldwide, with mixed reviews and harsh criticism. And one of the harsh critics has been the 2021 F1 world champion, Max Verstappen.
Max Verstappen accused the show of putting him in a bad light, after forging a fake rivalry against his ex-teammate and now McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo. Due to this reason and alleged usage of comments out of context, Max Verstappen also decided to not give an interview to the Netflix team and stayed out of the show.
Max Verstappen doesn’t like the show faking rivalries

This season the show has also received flak from many drivers, especially from both the Red Bull drivers, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. Max Verstappen has again spoken harsh words against the show, of which he’s not the part of for the first time.
The Red Bull driver said, “I watched two episodes, but I was not very impressed. It’s just not my thing, faking rivalries.” This was in a way supported by his teammate Sergio Perez, as he said, “There was enough drama in the season. They obviously went too far in the prior season. I expected it to be the best season ever, but to be honest, I haven’t completed it yet.”
The show has been accused of overdramatization and forging rivalries between several drivers in the past, which Max believes has damaged his image in the past. Max Verstappen’s criticism thus also comes from a general perception of the show.
