Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez is a Mexican racing driver who races in Formula One for the Red Bull racing team. He has previously driven for Sauber, McLaren, Racing point and Force India. He was promoted to Red bull when he was about to get out of seat from Racing point in 2021. For the 2021 season, Sergio Perez confirmed his seat at F1 with Red bull.

After seven seasons with the now, Aston Martin team, Sergio Perez joined Red bull ahead of the 2021 season replacing Alex Albon. The deal with Red bull alongside Max Verstappen came with a lot of pressure for Alex Albon which was then replaced by Sergio Perez.

Max Verstappen won the title with 395.5 points with Sergio finishing fourth in the Drivers’ Championship giving his career best and showing immense potential to the team. In his first year with Red bull, Sergio Perez was able to bag P1 in Baku setting a record to claim the position since 2018 alongside Max Verstappen. Daniel Ricciardo held the record before him.

Struggles and improvements in this first year of Sergio Perez with Red Bull

In an interview, Jonathan Wheatley, the former British Formula One mechanic and team manager who is currently the Sporting director at the Red bull Racing Formula One team said that, “It’s very difficult to make that transition to a big team from a small team. Very difficult, and understanding how to use the tools available to you, and the people available to you, and to use them correctly, and to sort of separate the wheat from the chaff.”

Jonathan adds on to his statement by praising Sergio saying that, “This is what a more experienced driver brings to a team. They know what’s important.”

“Out of all the information they have gained over that run or that lap or that race, they focus on what is stopping them from going quicker, and of course, Checo is a master of that. He understands it exactly,” he added.

As the interview proceeded, Wheatley acknowledged Sergio’s efforts to fit in the team and give his 100% knowing the pressure put on the second driver at Red Bull, he said, “Having Perez, who made his debut in 2011, was also very different for him as a sporting director. We brought quite a few young drivers into the team here, I think more than most big teams would normally do, and I’ve built a knowledge bank from that, [of] how to support and help the drivers through those transitional years.”

With Perez retaining for the 2022 season alongside Max Verstappen, fans and pundits are excited to see what the duo has in store. The 2022 F1 season will surely bring more drama and chaos amongst many other surprises.
