‘McLaren deserved a lot more,’ Lando Norris reflects on a disappointing second half of the season
Lando Norris
Lando Norris suffered a slow puncture in the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi. The Briton was certainly running for a podium finish, but a puncture cost him a golden opportunity to finish third. Lando Norris believes that McLaren were super unlucky in the second half of the season, and certainly deserved more.
Lando Norris finished seventh at the Abu Dhabi GP, to claim his third consecutive P6 finish in overall standings. Carlos Sainz, who managed to finish third ended up at P5 after an extraordinary end to the season.
However, one must not deny the fact that Lando Norris has been hampered by bad luck in the second half of the season. A red flag in Saudi Arabia, two punctures in Abu Dhabi and Qatar did not help him close out the season the way he wanted.
“Of course, I’ve made a couple of mistakes, Brazil for me the big one, that cost me,” Norris told RacingNews365.
“But apart from there, we’ve just been very unlucky with the punctures, with problems and incidents, whatever. It just hasn’t been the second half of the season that we wanted. We deserved a lot more,” he added.
Lando Norris explains his puncture in Abu Dhabi
Lando Norris revealed that McLaren have done a much better job than the results show. McLaren are the only team in F1 this season to have a 1-2 podium finish despite complete domination by Mercedes and Red Bull all season.
Lando Norris explained his slow puncture at Abu Dhabi GP, as he was pushing for a podium finish. The Briton said that initially, the team did not realize what the issue was, as he was also dealing with gear box issues.
“[I also had] some gearbox problems. I wouldn’t say it really cost us anything, it cost me some time here and there, but didn’t cost me positions, thankfully,” said Norris.
“But the puncture did, so the puncture ruined it really. Especially after the Safety Car, we could have had a chance to at least fight Carlos, go for a P3 or a P4. There was still a good chance I could have finished fifth [in the championship] as a driver,” he added.
“Through no fault of mine or the team’s we lost out again, so it’s just more unlucky moments, things thrown away from us or taken away from us. I can’t get frustrated by it, I just have to deal with it,” Norris continued.
