Max Verstappen claimed his first-ever drivers’ championship title after he overtook Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi GP. Despite all the controversy that surrounds the FIA decision, one cannot deny how good the Dutchman has been all season.
Mercedes’ two appeals were not upheld by FIA, which meant that Max Verstappen was officially crowned as the new world champion. McLaren driver, Lando Norris congratulated the Dutchman for an incredible season.
He posted a picture of him hugging the newly crowned champion, with the caption, “Congrats World Champ. I got you, don’t cry Max Verstappen. ?”
Max Verstappen takes the championship in the final lap of the season
It went all down to the wire at the Yas Marina Circuit on Sunday, as it seemed that Lewis Hamilton was heading towards a comfortable victory. However, things took a turn for the worse for Mercedes, as a safety car was introduced due to an incident involving Mick Schumacher and Nicholas Latifi with just about five laps to go.
FIA allowed the five lapped cars between Max and Hamilton to pass the safety car, as Max Verstappen had one lap to snatch the championship away from Lewis Hamilton. He did just that, with his fresher tyres, he took the lead in Turn 5 and defended brilliantly.
Max Verstappen would surely have had his heart in the mouth, as the stewards reviewed the two appeals made by Mercedes. However, both appeals were not upheld by FIA, and the final classification of the race remained the same.
