Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff did the right thing by skipping FIA Gala: David Croft

Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff were absent from the FIA Price giving gala that took place on Thursday night in Paris. Mercedes were also not present at the annual FIA photoshoot the day before the gala, as they are still feeling pretty shocked with the events that occurred at the Abu Dhabi GP.

Mercedes withdrew their appeal against FIA in their statement on Thursday evening, stating that they walked out of the Yas Marina Circuit, feeling disillusioned. However, they extended their congratulations to Max Verstappen, who is the newly crowned F1 champion.

Sky F1 commentator, David Croft believes that Hamilton and Wolff made the correct decision to skip the event, as they think that they have been robbed of a world championship title.

I’m not surprised he [Hamilton] feels the way that he does, I’m not surprised Toto Wolff feels the way that he does, nor the rest of the Mercedes team,” said to Sky F1. “They feel that they have been robbed of a Drivers’ World Championship, in doing so it is rather stopping them celebrating what is an amazing, historic, eighth-consecutive Constructors’ title,” he added.

A break from the sport would be ideal for Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff: David Croft

David Croft believes that taking a break from the sport would be ideal for Hamilton and Wolff after such a grueling and a exhausting season. Hence, the decision to completely stay away from the gala was a good one in their case.

I say good on Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton for not going to the FIA gala tonight. Why go along and sit there when they still feel such raw, strong emotions from Sunday in Abu Dhabi? Why go along to attend the prize-giving gala? I’m sure they could actually do with a break from the sport,” he added.

Despite Toto Wolff expressing his uncertainty regarding Lewis Hamilton’s return in 2022, Croft stated that the duo will surely be eager to make a strong statement in the season opener in Bahrain next year. For now, it is important for them to regroup as a team.

In time, with a bit of a break from the on-track action, from the hectic day-by-day-by-day nature of Formula 1 as it is at the moment, I think they’ll change their opinions and they will both want to be there at the first race in Bahrain,” Croft suggested.
