Mercedes Boss Toto Wolff fires warning to new F1 Race Director for indulging in a “Jewelry Fight” With Lewis Hamilton

Among the various changes that the 2022 Formula One season brought with it, one that caught the eye was Michael Masi being ousted and Neils Wittich and Eduardo Freitas stepping in as the new Race Director.
However, like his predecessor, Neils Wittich has already gotten into the bad books of Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff. Ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, Toto Wolff warned Wittich against entering into a jewelry “battle” with seven-time World Champion Lewis Champion
Before the Australian GP, Wittich came out with a bunch of notes reminding the drivers about what jewelry they are allowed to wear on the track and what jewelry is prohibited.
The Rule was introduced in 2005 but has rarely been followed, with Hamilton himself often sporting piercings during races.
Toto Wolff supports Hamilton’s decision to disagree with the Race Director
While speaking to the media, Hamilton made it very clear that despite Wittich’s warnings, he would not be removing any of his jewelry. Hamilton said: “They are personal things. You should be able to be who you are.” He was seen wearing piercings during the Grand Prix itself, but he hasn’t been punished in any form, yet.
Toto Wolff defended Hamilton’s stance and questioned Wittich about his decision to battle the sport’s most famous athlete, so early into his spell as a Race Director.
Wolff told the Press Association: “Is that a battle he [Wittich] needs to have at this stage?
“However, if it turns out to be the biggest unfortunate misstep of a Race Director, I would take it a thousand times over.”
However, Toto Wolff also admitted that he has been quite impressed by Wittich, as the first three races were handled by the Directors without any controversy
Wolff added, “How he has run the first few races has been respectful, solid and he hasn’t put a single foot wrong.”
