Mercedes have been the dominant force in Formula One since the start of the hybrid era in 2014. And even though Max Verstappen managed to win the world championship in 2021, it was very evident that the German constructor had built the fastest car on the grid.

However, that is not the case this year. With huge regulation changes, teams have had to build their cars from scratch, different teams taking different approaches to maximise their performance. And it is quite evident that Mercedes have come up short. Ferrari have made the best use of the regulation changes and jumped to the front of the grid, while Mercedes are still figuring out ways to deal with the issue of porpoising.

In the Season opener at Bahrain, Mercedes finished P3 and P4, but in reality it was aided by the unfortunate DNFs suffered by the two Red Bull Racing drivers during the race. At one point in time, the Mercedes was being overtaken by a Haas, something which noone could have seen coming.

In the second race of the season Mercedes finished P5 and P10, which reflected their actual form. But they came back to finish P3 and P4 again in the Australian Grand Prix, this time aided by the DNFs of Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz.

Seven time World Champion Lewis Hamilton however believes that they are by no means hopeless this season. In a conversation with Formule1.nl, Hamilton expressed his hopes about Mercedes quickly solving all the issues that have been plaguing them this season. “Realistically, the top teams are developing at the same pace. Whether that will be the case with the new cars? Who knows.“, said Hamilton.

In a nutshell, Lewis Hamilton hopes that Mercedes will be able to make a comeback from their disappointing start to the 2022 Formula One Season. Even though Ferrari and Red Bull Racing are far ahead of the Mercedes F1 team currently, Hamilton believes in his team and hopes that they can make up the lost ground pretty soon. Will his premonition be true and can Mercedes catch up to Ferrari anytime soon? That remains to be seen.
