“Nothing would surprise me if Carlos Sainz becomes champion” : Jan Lammers
Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz
Former Dutch racing driver Jan Lammers has his bets on Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz to be a possible world driver champion. This year, F1 will feature brand new cars that have been built in accordance with the newly implemented rules and regulations. There’s a lot of uncertainty regarding how the championship will play out this year.
On the penultimate day of testing, Verstappen set the pace in his RB18, seven tenths ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Mick Schumacher ultimately separated the two, but only after additional hours of testing at Haas, with the German half a second slower than the Red Bull racer. It was all cloaked in anonymity, though, as testing is, without any of the teams knowing their opponents’ motor settings or fuel burn – or any other vital information.
Lammers is bewildered, just like the others. “I have mentioned before that I wouldn’t be surprised if Max dominates this year,” added the Dutch driver. “Moreover, nothing else would astonish me if Carlos Sainz were to win the World Championship.”
Jan Lammers gives his views on the 2022 F1 championship
Jan Lammers mentioned how unpredictable this season is going to be. There have already been multiple debates about Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari being serious title contenders this season. Mercedes have been pretty consistent in hailing Ferrari as serious competitors this season.
Red Bull’s Team Principal Christian Horner has also been talking positively about Ferrari’s progress in the two testing phases that took place at Barcelona and Bahrain. Scuderia Ferrari driver on the other hand has been proclaiming that a fast paced Ferrari during testing won’t ensure a just as enough fast paced Ferrari in the championship.
“Everyone is impressed like everyone was impressed in ’18, ’19, ’17 and we all know that testing means nothing so I don’t know why people keep falling into the same trap year after year of trying to analyse testing too much,” he said. “I don’t understand why people keep falling into the same trap of trying to conclude who is fastest without really knowing what the others are doing,” added the Spaniard who placed third on the last race of the 2021 F1 season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
