“I’m lacking a bit of pace to fight for points,” Sebastian Vettel gives an honest assessment of his struggles

Sebastian Vettel endured a torrid time at Ferrari last season, where he could manage only 33 points. The four time world champion made his switch to Aston Martin this season, in a bid to revive his career. However, things have not been working out for the German off-late.

Sebastian Vettel has struggled so far this season, and has failed to pick up any points in the opening four races. The former Red Bull driver finished P11 at the Spanish GP, although it was a slightly better performance from Vettel. He gave an honest opinion on his struggles, and believes that he clearly lacks the pace.

Well, more comfortable,” said Vettel when asked about how he felt after the Spanish GP. “I think [on Sunday], with hindsight, maybe here and there we could have done something different, but I need to have a look. Overall, it’s probably a fair estimate of where we stand at the moment,” he added.

A couple of tenths and a couple of starting positions can make a difference, so unfortunately, there wasn’t really a gap or a window for us [in Spain]. I need to have a look. Obviously we lost a bit of time in the first pitstop, and we were early for the second round, I was stuck behind the Alfa and then burned the tyres. So that was pretty much our race,” the German continued.

I was a bit surprised with the Alpine: Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel stated that in the current scenario, each team was trying to make progress, which makes it even difficult for Aston Martin. The German revealed that he was bit surprised with Alpine’s performance at the Spanish GP, as they failed to replicate the pace they showed in the qualifying session.

Well, I think everybody is trying to make progress, so it’s difficult to make a lot more progress than the others. I was a bit surprised with the Alpine, they weren’t very quick in the race. I expected them to be faster, because they were so much faster[on Saturday],” he added.

But I think we see it’s very close. Equally the AlphaTauris were a lot faster in the race than they were in qualifying. Every weekend is a bit different. And if it’s so tight, maybe if you’ll feel a bit more comfortable, maybe the car suits better to the track, you find an extra one or two tenths,” Vettel concluded.
