“This World Championship will be decided by the second driver in the team,” says Helmut Marko

Sergio Perez
Mercedes are chasing their eighth consecutive constructors championship this season, as Lewis Hamilton looks in unstoppable form. The 36-year old is also chasing his eight championship this year, and his fifth consecutive title. The Briton has had the best start to his F1 season so far, securing 94 points in just four races. On the other hand, Max Verstappen is placed second, with 80 points, whereas, Valtteri Bottas is placed third.
Red Bull advisor, Helmut Marko has stated that in order for Verstappen to win the championship, Sergio Perez will have to fight for the podium on a regular basis. The Mexican joined Red Bull this season, after he ended his spell with Aston Marin last year. The 31-year old has had a decent start to his season, as he has finished P5 on two occasions, and P4 on one occasion.
Sergio Perez was also voted as the Driver of the Day at Portugal GP and Bahrain GP. The Mexican is yet to find his feet at Red Bull, and is still not at his 100%.
We need to make sure we beat Mercedes: Helmut Marko
Helmut Marko stated that the world championship will also be decided by the second driver in the team. Valtteri Bottas, Hamilton’s teammate at Mercedes gives his team an extra opportunity to strategize, as the duo are able to keep the pressure on Max Verstappen.
“This World Championship will also be decided by the second driver in the team,” said Marko. The 78-year old also stated that Sergio Perez is constantly improving, and will be at his best in the upcoming races. “Perez is constantly improving. He doesn’t want to reinvent the car like Gasly. Instead, he looks at Max, analyses his laps and recognizes where he needs to improve,” he added.
The next race of the season will take place in Monaco this weekend, as Red Bull will hope to keep the pressure on Mercedes. The race is an important one for Max Verstappen as he needs to make sure that Lewis Hamilton does not stretch his lead at the top.
