“The Kinds of Things…Cannot Happen”: Max Verstappen accepts Red Bull miles behind Ferrari after second DNF of the season

Max Verstappen walked into the Australian Grand Prix 2022 at Albert Park, Melbourne, with 20 points to make up. Luckily, Red Bull has been able to crack the code in this era of new FIA regulations in Formula 1 and the RB-18 has got enough speed to give the Ferraris a good chase. With a brilliant driver like Verstappen behind the wheels, Red Bull were sure they would score a podium with Verstappen this weekend. But all of their hopes came to an end during Sunday’s race when Max Verstappen had to pull up due to mechanical issues and withdraw from the race.

Bahrain has already seen Max Verstappen suffer due to the problems with his car. The 2021 World Champion from Red Bull is eyeing another year at the top of the drivers’ points table. To achieve this feat, Max Verstappen simply cannot make a single error because his closest rival Charles Leclerc has made no mistake to declare that he is racing for the Championship in his Ferrari SF-75 this year.

To the dismay of Dutch racer’s fans, Max Verstappen’s Red Bull has broken down during two races in the first three races that have taken place this year, causing Verstappen to lose out on some much-need and deserved Championship points. In the post-race interview that followed the Australian GP, Verstappen’s disappointment was almost palpable as he said the mistakes with his car should be corrected soon or else he would never get to win the World Championship for a second time.

“Frustrating and unacceptable.”: Max Verstappen’s reaction after Australian GP DNF

Max Verstappen’s Red Bull had had an overall decent weekend at Albert Park up until Sunday. He showed some amazing speed at Friday’s FP2 and he also bagged P2 in the Qualifying Session the following day. But on Sunday, his luck was clearly not with him as his race engineer told him to stop the car at turn 2 while he was running the 39th lap. As he was coming to a halt, Verstappen said he could smell “some weird fluid” in his car.

In the first three races of the season, either Max Verstappen has had a victory or an absolute retirement. This has now caused him to be 46 points away from the Championship favorite Charles Leclerc. When asked for Verstappen’s reaction to his race today, he said, “Quite an easy P2 and I knew I could not fight Charles so was no point trying to put pressure on him.”

We didn’t even finish the race, so pretty frustrating and unacceptable.

Verstappen also said, he “knew there was a problem” before the race so there was uncertainty as to how he would finish the race.

These kinds of things, if you want to fight for the title, cannot happen,” he said.

With 46 points to make up for and a Championship dream to chase, Verstappen needs to make no mistakes this time. Will his team be able to rule out all the errors with his RB-18 and give the #1 another go at winning the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix two weeks from now? That remains to be seen.
