Barcelona testing has gotten over, and the teams have their data to work with for a couple of weeks before they head for the final testing in Bahrain. Barcelona testing allowed the drivers to get their hands onto their respective cars of the 2022 season.

Carlos Sainz was one of the few in the paddock to talk about the new tires that accompany the new cars. The tires, just like the cars, have undergone several changes under the new regulations. Tire size has increased significantly from 13 inches to 18 inches this year.

And the Ferrari driver looks impressed by the new tires as he says, “They look like they are suiting well this new generation of cars, and they look to be at least allowing you to push a bit more on them,” as quoted by Motorsport.com.

And out of all the drivers on the grid, it was Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz who had put in maximum laps. The Spanish driver drove 236 laps alone, much higher than both drivers of some teams combined.

Sainz, who has previously tested the tires last year is happy with their performance. Sainz says, “Compared to other years, maybe a bit less overheating, a bit less deg, but there’s still deg, they’re still a tyre that degrades a tyre that overheats, but the scale of it for me personally, I feel like it’s a bit better. And the work done by Pirelli last year and the development seems to start to pay off a bit.”

He added, “There looks to be also quite a big step from compounds, which is something that in the last few years, for example, the C2, C3 and C4 were all very close to each other. And here there seems to be, at least around Barcelona, quite a big step in grip from one compound to another. So it could maybe mix up things in races a bit. So in that sense some extra differences there compared to last year.”

If the tires perform as Sainz believes they’ve done so far, we, the fans, are in for a treat this season. Coupled with the cars of the 2022 season, which have been designed to reduce dirty air and encourage closer racing, the tires can spice up the season.
