Toto Wolff drops huge update on Lewis Hamilton’s future in F1; can provide ‘no assurances’ the Briton will go racing again

Mercedes have announced that they have withdrawn their appeal against FIA in their latest statement on Thursday. Lewis Hamilton lost the drivers championship in a very controversial manner, as FIA’s handling of the safety car on the final lap has stirred a huge uproar.

Toto Wolff stated that Mercedes are still pretty shocked with the events that occurred on Sunday, and it will take a long time to digest the result. Speaking about Lewis Hamilton, Wolff added that the Briton is in a huge state of distress and he will never overcome the pain of losing his championship on Sunday at Abu Dhabi GP. Wolff added that he can provide no assurances in regards to Lewis Hamilton’s future in F1.

It’s going to take a long time for us to digest what has happened on Sunday. I don’t think we will ever come over it, that’s not possible,” said Wolff as quoted by Sky Sports.

And certainly not him (Hamilton) as a driver. I would very much hope the two of us and the rest of the team we can work through the events… But he will never overcome the pain and the distress that was caused on Sunday,” he added.

Toto Wolff provided an uncertain answer when asked about the future of Lewis Hamilton in F1. The Austrian stated that he hopes to see Lewis back in 2022, but cannot provide a definitive answer.

“I would very much hope Lewis continues racing because he is the greatest driver of all time,” he said.

“As a racer his heart will say I need to continue because he’s at the peak of his game. But we have to overcome the pain that was caused upon him on Sunday. He is a man with clear values,” he went on.

Toto Wolff also stated that Lewis Hamilton and himself will not be present at FIA Price Giving Gala on Thursday night. Instead, Mercedes technical head James Allison would collect the constructors title on behalf of Mercedes.

I won’t be there because of my loyalty to Lewis and because of my own personal integrity,” Wolff asserted.
