“We’ve Been Too Unlucky”: Sergio Perez has mixed feeling after Max Verstappen and Red Bull lose further ground to Ferrari

Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix proved to be a bittersweet event for the entire Red Bull team. While one of their racers grabbed 18 points with a roaring P2 position, their biggest bet on winning the Championship–Max Verstappen–had to retire from the race due to some problems with his RB-18. This incident reminds the Red Bull fans that in Bahrain, both Sergio Perez and Verstappen DNF their races due to suspected fuel pump issues. It also brings to light the blaring fact that it is the second retirement in three races for Max and things don’t seem to be in his favor as far as the World Championship is concerned.

In the post-race interview, Checo Perez expressed his views on Red Bull’s performance so far. The Mexican was happy to grab his first podium this year after a retirement in the Bahrain GP and a fourth-place at Jeddah. But his teammate Verstappen is now 46 points behind the Championship leader Charles Leclerc after a second DNF at Albert Park.

On Saturday, at the Qualifying Session for the 2022 Australian Grand Prix, both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez had put up a great performance with P2 for the Dutch and P3 for Checo, respectively. This comes after Perez’s spectacular pole position at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix. Sergio Perez had a more-or-less unproblematic run at Albert Park on Sunday as he had started in the second row beside McLaren driver Lando Norris. Norris lost his position to the Mercedes teammates Hamilton and Russell but they could not catch up to Perez’s Red Bull.

When asked about his reaction to the Red Bull team’s results at Albert Park on Sunday in the post-race interview, Sergio Perez said, “It’s a good result, but unfortunately we lost Max, it would have been great to have a double-podium for the team. We’ve been a bit too unlucky in the first few races.”

The race had been saved for Red Bull by Sergio Perez as he managed to bring 18 Championship points to the team. But everyone who saw Verstappen race, knew that he had a sure-shot chance at winning the second place in the Australian Grand Prix. At one point, he even went for the first place by pushing against Leclerc’s Ferrari but he fell back due to lack of speed.

When he was nearing Turn 2 in the 39th lap, Verstappen’s engineer asked him to pull up. That is when he could smell some “weird fluid” as he retired from the race. Verstappen’s car caught fire subsequently and it marked another DNF for Verstappen in the first three races of the season.
