Frances Tiafoe has admitted that he felt like Roger Federer on the court after coming from behind to beat Daniil Medvedev at the Laver Cup. The American helped Team World earn a second consecutive day lead against Team Europe.

Tiafoe took his North American form to Berlin for the Laver Cup. The American had finished as runners-up at the Cincinnati Open after losing to Jannik Sinner in a straight set in the final. He reached his second US Open final two weeks later but lost to fellow compatriot Taylor Fritz in a five epic set thriller at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Ahead of his match against Medvedev, Tiafoe was second favorite to beat the Russian, having lost to him on five occasions with no victory. Medvedev took an early lead winning the first set 6-3, but Tiafoe increased the level of his game to take the second set. The American was out on top with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 to give Team World a 4-2 lead against Team Europe.

After the match, the 26-year-old revealed that he felt like Roger Federer during the tie-break win against Medvedev.

It's crazy. The courts are obviously much slower than I’m used to playing on, so it’s tough playing Daniil on this court. But after the second set, midway into the second and in the tie-break, I felt like I was Roger Federer, honestly.

Tiafoe is certainly a leader in Team World. He has participated in five of the seven editions of the Laver Cup, including the inaugural event in Prague seven years ago. He helped Team World shock Team Europe by winning the title in Federer’s final career tournament.

The American had struggled with his game earlier this season. He reached his first final at the Houston Open in April, losing the title to Ben Shelton. However, during the North American swing, he reached three semifinals and one runner-up finish. He revealed that he is enjoying his performance at the Laver Cup.

I just have a lot more confidence in myself. I’m having a lot of fun playing the game at the moment. I’m just trying to play the right way and compete as hard as I can, let the chips fall where they may.
