Frances Tiafoe has stated that Novak Djokovic was “insane” for still competing on the ATP tour after everything he has achieved in his career, especially after winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics. That said, he acknowledged that it was Djokovic’s competitive trait that made him one of the best players in the history of the sport.

At a US Open press conference, Tiafoe spoke about his admiration for Djokovic and admitted that he has a good relationship with the Serbian. He also highlighted the Serbian’s mentality that helped him build an amazing career.

He's done everything in the game. I mean, it's incredible he's even out here. Like if I did what he did after the gold medal, I'm just staying in Serbia and I'm chilling, drinking like crazy. I mean, that's why he is who he is, right? He's an unbelievable guy too. Me and him crack jokes all the time and I really like that dude. But yeah, I mean 37 and wanna come back out here, that's insanity.

Djokovic ended his long wait for an Olympic gold medal by defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final in Paris. He later said it was his “biggest sporting success” and opined that he had “completed” all the records after winning it.

Novak Djokovic cites change in surface as reason for early exit at 2024 US Open

While there was intention and spirit, Novak Djokovic lacked game time on hard courts when he arrived in New York for the 2024 US Open. He decided to skip all events between the Paris Olympics and the season’s final Grand Slam. The Serbian has opined that the change in surface, from clay to hard court, led to his early exit from the US Open.

Djokovic lost 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to Alexei Popyrin in the third round. After the defeat, the Serbian said that he was disappointed in himself and stated that he played some of the worst tennis of his career at the tournament.

It's a different surface. Obviously, it had an effect. I spent a lot of energy winning the gold, and I did arrive to New York just not feeling fresh mentally and physically. But because it's [the] US Open, I gave it a shot and I tried my best. I didn't have any physical issues. I just felt out of gas and you could see that with the way I played.

Djokovic will now finish the year without winning a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2017. As of now, he is set to take part in the Shanghai Masters (October 2-13), the Paris Masters (October 28 to November 3), and the ATP Finals (November 10-17) before the season comes to an end.
