Jannik Sinner praised Carlos Alcaraz despite the Spaniard’s disappointing early exit at the 2024 US Open. Sinner admitted that regardless of Alcaraz’s recent poor run, he has proven on many occasions that he is a tough opponent on the ATP Tour.

Alcaraz was among the favorites to win the US Open having won the French Open and Wimbledon. However, things haven’t gone well for him since the Paris Olympics. He exited in the second round at the Cincinnati Open, losing to 38-year-old Gael Monfils. At Flushing Meadows, Alcaraz was stunned by World No. 84 Botic Van de Zandschulp in the second round.

After just one win in his last two tournaments, Alcaraz admitted that he will take time away from tennis and understand himself. However, Sinner was full of praise for the World No. 3 despite his exit in New York. He plays with a very high percentage of first serves. It's very dangerous when he plays the forehand when he has time. So there are many, many great things. Obviously, you know, he has been No. 1 in the world and won multiple Grand Slams, so it's tough to find weaknesses in this kind of player. And also mentally, no? He's a huge competitor and very tough to beat.

On Saturday (August 31), Sinner beat Australian Christopher O’Connell to reach the fourth round of the US Open. This means he has entered the second week of all the Grand Slams this year. He won the Australian Open in January, reached the semifinals at the French Open, and made it to the quarterfinals at the Wimbledon Championships.

The Italian continued to gain momentum at the US Open after his third round 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory over World No. 87 Christopher O’Connell. After the match, he stated that he would focus on himself as he entered the business end of the tournament.

Anything can happen in this sport. I focus on my side of the net and appreciate every moment on the court. We've already seen two big shocks with Alcaraz and Djokovic out, but for me, it's all about being here and playing as many matches as possible.

Sinner will face 14th seed Tommy Paul in the fourth round. He leads the American 2-1 in the head-to-head. They last faced each other at the National Bank Open last year, where the World No. 1 won 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals.
