American tennis star Frances Tiafoe‘s dreams of winning his maiden Masters 1000 title were shattered on Monday (August 19) when Jannik Sinner beat him in straight sets in the 2024 Cincinnati Open final. Tiafoe, who played in his first-ever Masters 1000 final, was unhappy with the runner-up finish.
While disappointed about the loss, Tiafoe was also mightily impressed with his opponent’s level. He lauded Sinner for his exemplary performance and complimented the Italian in his typical style.
When asked what made Sinner a tough opponent, Tiafoe had an interesting answer.
Ask everybody else on the tour, mothe*****er can't lose. He has a really good serve, he moves so well. 6 4', and lanky, he moves so well. And his average pace on the ball is big and he has a great dip, so you feel like you are overplaying to match his medium.Frances Tiafoe said in his post-match press conference
The 26-year-old also spoke about the mistakes he made and reckoned that he needed to play more offensively against Sinner.
Frances Tiafoe asks Jannik Sinner to not beat him in New York
After losing the Cincinnati final, Frances Tiafoe also made a request to Jannik Sinner during the trophy presentation ceremony. The American asked the Italian not to beat him if they played each other at the 2024 US Open.
Tiafoe congratulated Sinner on winning the title and becoming World No. 1. He then wished him the best at the US Open, before slipping in the cheeky request.
I guess I gotta congratulate Jannik man. Congrats for everything you’ve been doing.. Getting to #1 in the world. And pretty much never losing ever. Keep going.. all the best in New York. If we play, don’t beat me in New York.Frances Tiafoe said during his on-court speech
Notably, Tiafoe and Sinner have now played five times against each other and the American has managed only one win. The solitary win for Tiafoe against Sinner came at the Vienna Open in 2021 when he beat the Italian in the semifinal of the ATP 500 tournament. Since then, Tiafoe has lost twice to Sinner.
