French Open 2020: Elina Svitolina reaches the quarter-finals after edging past Caroline Garcia
The day 8 of the French Open 2020 witnessed the third seed Elina Svitolina registering a win. Svitolina toppled Caroline Garcia winning early breaks as the match began. Svitolina could win in straight sets 6-1,6-3.
The Frenchwoman, Caroline Garcia, won her previous battle against Elise Mertens in three sets. But today she could not dominate the play, losing the first set in just 26 minutes.
Elina Svitolina only seed in upper half
The day saw a major disappointment earlier, when top seed Simona Halep lost to Iga Swiatek. Now, in the upper half of the draw, Elina Svitolina is the only seeded player that remains in the draw. The world No.5 will be proud of herself, playing the first slam after the tour resumed. Elina was aggressive in her match and sealed the first set to win 6-1.
In the second set, Svitolina could earn a break of serve but Garcia broke back soon. However, too many unforced errors from Garcia followed by a break of service made it easy for Svitolina. Elina Svitolina sealed a win at Philip Chartier, to reach the quarter-finals. The third seed is up against Nadia Podoroska in the next round.
