French Open 2020: Victoria Azarenka crashes out of Roland Garros, loses to Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova in 2nd round
Azarenka 4
US Open 2020 finalist, Victoria Azarenka bowed out in the second round of French Open 2020, losing to world number 161, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
Earlier, Schmiedlova won against 7-time Grand Slam champion, Venus Williams. Now, she has caused a major upset by taking out Azarenka. The Bulgarian played some phenomenal tennis, yet it was just not enough to win against the young 161 ranked player.
Azarenka defeated in straight sets
Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova started the match by breaking the serve of Azarenka. To make amends, Azarenka tried hard in a seven-minute-long game and lost as her opponent saved two breakpoints. Azarenka soon realised the game was not going to be easy.
Trailing 2-0, Azarenka was at the back foot early on. Azarenka tried to put pressure with her phenomenal returns. But after earning another break, Schmiedlova sealed the game with a 6-2 win over Azarenka.
Starting off poor, Azarenka made sure to hold serve in set 2. With much struggle, Azarenka could do so but Schmiedlova just hit the next gear and broke Bulgarian. This was enough to dominate the already trailing Azarenka. Finally, with another break, the second set ended 6-2.
Schmiedlova is into Round 3 and enjoying a great run so far at French Open 2020.
