Tennis stars Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina announced their engagement on social media on Saturday. The news came as a surprise to fans all around the world as the couple announced they are taking ‘a break’ a few days back.

“She said YES ♥️ Madame Monfils @ElinaSvitolina,” Monfils wrote on Twitter, accompanied by a photo of a ring on the Ukrainian’s finger.

Svitolina and Monfils, who run a joint Instagram account called “g.e.m.s. life” have been dating since 2018. Svitolina credits Monfils for bringing a sense of calm to her game. G.E.M.S. stands for their combined initials: Gael Elina Monfils Svitolina.

‘To the beginning of our forever’: Elina Svitolina

Svitolina posted a picture of the couple at the base of snowy mountains with her ring on. She wrote: “YES!!! To the beginning of our forever?? .”

Svitolina credits Monfils for bringing a sense of calm to her game.

She said:  “I’m more open with my coach and also with Gaël about the tennis and my feelings. This really changed, I think, for the past, I don’t know, nine, 10 months.”

On tour, Svitolina played the semi-finals at the Miami Open 2021 and flew back to Europe the same day she lost her match.
