Another day, another error from George Lombard Jr. in the infield. On Thursday, the youngster tied an unwanted franchise record following an error in a 6th successive game.
The 21-year-old was called up to the major leagues this month after the team demoted shortstop Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez. With his excellent defensive showing in the minor leagues, the Yankees were not too bothered by his defense.
He electrified the fans in his debut with an impressive defensive showing. After 11 games, he was one of the top shortstops in the league with 8 defensive runs saved.

However, in recent games he has been in a slump. In the series finale against the Houston Astros, he had another mishap in the infield.
In the 8th inning, the Yankees found themselves 4-1 down. Yainer Diaz chopped a slow bouncer to the left side, which Lombard Jr. was unable to scoop. Jose Caballero then picked up the ball and made an errant throw towards first base, leading to the 5th run for the Astros.

The Yankees ended up losing 5-1 and dropped the series. While the error did not have a great effect on the result, Lombard Jr. tied an unwanted franchise record.
He became the first player since Chick Fewster in 1921 to make errors in 6 consecutive games. He also became the first shortstop since Roger Peckinpaugh in 1915 to do this.

As per Elias Sports Bureau, he is the first player after shortstop Mark Lewis to commit errors in 6 consecutive games. He did so with the Cleveland Indians during the 1992 season.
George Lombard Jr. admits his defensive slump is unacceptable
After a strong start, George Lombard Jr. has found himself in a defensive slump. Following the game on Thursday, he admitted that his defensive slump is unacceptable.

When he was called up, the Yankees had some problems at shortstop. Anthony Volpe had struggled in the past and was not having a good time.
The former first-round pick found himself under tremendous heat from fans after repeated mistakes. Many urged the team to replace him and call up Lombard Jr. to the major leagues.
So when he got called up, he knew the pressure would be there on his young shoulders. After a promising start, he has now found himself in a bit of trouble.
It’s something I’m trying to figure out. Obviously, it’s not acceptable. It can’t happen at this level. If you make your pitchers have to get extra outs, it just makes it way harder on us, and other teams are going to capitalize.
George Lombard Jr. told the reporters
"It's not acceptable, can't happen at this level."

The good point for Lombard Jr. is that he is very young into his MLB career. The game on Thursday was just his 20th appearance for the Yankees.
The American League East would be hoping he breaks out of the slump soon. Up next for them is a 4-game showdown against their arch-rivals, the Boston Red Sox. This upcoming series will be Lombard Jr.’s first taste of the rivalry series between the two historic teams.
