Georginio Wijnaldum scores to complete comeback win for Netherlands over Poland
Netherlands defeated Poland 2-1 late into the match after having trailed since early. Memphis Depay scored a penalty while Wijnaldum headed in the winning goal. Both teams however don’t qualify from their group as Italy leads.
Trailing since the early minutes
Bayern Munich’s star forward Robert Lewandowski sent pass that found Kamil Jozwiak in acres of space. He raced forward and wasn’t able to be caught by the Dutch defense. In a one-on-one position with Tim Krul, he dispatched the ball neatly into the net. Netherlands fell back in the fifth minute and trailed from there for a long period of time.
Georginio Wijnaldum missed a one-on-one with Lukasz Fabianski when he shot straight at the ‘keeper. Donyell Malen couldn’t keep his header on target while Fabianski denied Memphis Depay with his fingertips. Things changed when Southampton’s Jan Bednarek fouled Wijnaldum in the Polish penalty box. Depay converted the resulting penalty and finally equalized for the Dutch after 72 minutes of trailing the match. In the 84th minute Wijnaldum rose highest to meet Steven Berghuis’s corner. He was able to keep it on target and scored as Netherlands did a comeback victory.
There has been back-to-back victories for the newly appointed manager Frank De Boer. Wijnaldum won the match then too with his brace and now he does with a late winner.
