The Milwaukee Bucks have made the headlines following their decision to sign star player Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s younger brother Thanasis Antetokounmpo. Thanasis has been dealing with an injury that has kept him out since this past 2023-24 NBA Playoffs. Not only that, he is also reported to miss the entirety of the 2024-25 NBA season.
The Bucks’ previous season ended on May 2 when they lost Game 6 of their first-round playoff series against the Indiana Pacers 120-98, with Thanasis playing the final three minutes of garbage time. In the days following the defeat to the Pacers, Thanasis sustained an injury while working out, according to Shams Charania and Eric Nehm of The Athletic.
According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, the Bucks are attempting to clear a roster spot in order to perhaps re-sign Thanasis because they appreciate his presence in the locker room. Many former NBA stars expressed their views regarding this, with former NBA player Gilbert Arenas calling him ‘the most important player’ besides his brother.

Milwaukee has some interest in re-signing locker room favorite Thanasis Antetokounmpo, a league source told @spotrac.
The Bucks have reportedly told teams that they are interested in trading MarJon Beauchamp, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer. They are primarily doing this to keep hold of Thanisis as he is crucial to keeping his brother Giannis happy. It’s important to note that, Thanasis played an important role in his brother signing a contract extension.
Gilbert Arenas calls Thanasis Antetokounmpo the ‘most important’ player besides brother
Thanasis Antetokounmpo has been unsigned after his injury. However, this is because the Milwaukee Bucks are planning to re-sign him.
Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas weighed in on the Bucks’ decision by stating how important the younger Antetokounmpo brother was in the Bucks’ squad.
"Besides Giannis, the most important person on the team is his brother."

The Milwaukee Bucks know not to get rid of Thanasis. https://t.co/mEA2S0tZGB pic.twitter.com/KGvUye1Q1w
Thanasis, who averaged 0.9 points, 0.4 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.2 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game in 2023–24, has been a fantastic presence in the Milwaukee Bucks locker room. He is the best contender for that last roster place and doesn’t make a big deal out of playing time.
However, Thanasis is not signed up as of now and is sidelined by an Achilles tendon tear. It’s unclear when the 32-year-old will be able to return to the court after suffering the injury back in May.
To please his brother Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks will most likely re-sign T. Antetokounmpo, so he won’t have to worry about finding a team. It will be interesting to watch how this situation unfolds in the upcoming days.
