Giannis Antetokounmpo has been one of the best players in the world over the last decade. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks as the 15th pick in the 2013 NBA draft and established himself in the league from the 2016-17 campaign.

Widely labeled as the “Greek Freak” for his size, strength, and speed, Antetokounmpo has won it all and continues to be a dominant force on both ends of the court. Injuries have taken a toll on him over the last few seasons, but he is ready to start a new life after leaving the Bucks.

Despite his achievements and dominance on the court, he has often been criticized by the likes of Stephen A. Smith and the media for a poor jump shot. However, with time, Antetokounmpo learned how to cancel out all the noise and focus on his game.

On an episode of the Thanalysis Show, Antetokounmpo revealed to Smith that he stopped giving too much attention to the media in the last few years.

What I figured out in 2019-2020 is that you guys and media analyzing my game will not help me make a jump shot. It will not help me make a FT or will not help me lead the team to the championship. Instead of me wasting time being mad because I’m really putting everything into the game. Let me just focus on my craft and things I can control.

The media plays an important role in growing the league worldwide. Stephen A. Smith is one of the most vocal figures in the media, and some of his bold takes have strained his relationship with certain players such as LeBron James and Kyrie Irving.

However, instead of confronting the media, Antetokounmpo shared how shifting his mindset about them helped him become an even better player. He also emphasized that he is well aware of the role the media plays in the league’s growth, and they are just doing their job.

Stephen A. Smith on dissecting Giannis Antetokounmpo’s game

Smith is known for his bold, wild takes. He is one of the biggest names in American sports media and never shies away from speaking his mind. The sports analyst has been critical of Antetokounmpo in the past and even called him an “underachiever” as the Greek superstar has not made a deep postseason run since winning the title in 2021.

During their conversation, Smith admitted to Antetokounmpo that he dissects his game with as much precision as possible.

You’re strictly confining yourself to the game of basketball. My attitude is, what the hell is wrong with folks complaining about that? You ain’t playing in a garage. You playing in an arena. Everybody’s watching you. And we’re going to dissect it because that’s what fans of the game do. And it’s my job to bring that to them.

The media can be unforgiving at times, and it can take a toll on players. But at the end of the day, they are just doing their job, and nothing is personal. Antetokounmpo is a superstar of the league, and therefore, the noise around him will always be louder.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is heading into next season with a point to prove

When fit and healthy, Giannis Antetokounmpo is undoubtedly one of the best players in the league. After an entire season of uncertainty regarding his future with the Bucks, he was finally traded to the Miami Heat in one of the biggest moves of the summer. The move came as he has struggled to compete for a championship since 2021.

With still over two months to go for the 2026-27 campaign, Antetokounmpo has set his eyes on dominating the league once again.

This season I will dominate. The things I want to prove are that I’m one of the best players in the NBA. To the fans I want to say, we’re bringing back the Heat. My new season mindset is winning. When the opportunity comes, I will dominate. Miami, get ready for an exciting season.

The Heat are coming off a difficult 2025-26 campaign as well. After getting clean-swept in the first round last year and missing the playoffs this year, the Heat are looking to contend next year with Antetokounmpo at the helm.

It has been a long time since the 31-year-old stamped his authority in the league. There have been some questions surrounding whether he can be his dominant version once again. He is still very much in his prime and is raring to make a mark in his first season in Miami.
