After a series of abysmal performances, the New York Giants finally took the decision to bench their quarterback, Daniel Jones. However, it appears the front office did not consult the players about the decision to bench Jones, and as a result, they are quite unhappy with it.
Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reported that the Giants’ decision to bench Jones, whom they signed in a lucrative four-year extension worth $160 million less than two years ago, has sparked “disappointment” within the locker room. The players are not happy with it, believing the intention was more toward monetary benefits than on the team’s performance.
To make matters worse within the organization, head coach Brian Daboll announced on Monday that while the team is making Tommy DeVito the starter, Jones has been demoted to the No. 3 quarterback. The backup remains Drew Lock, whom they signed for a contract worth $5 million this season.
A day after the announcement, superstar nose tackle Dexter Lawrence opened up about the front office’s decision to bench “the best quarterback” –as he called him, after returning to practice on Wednesday.

Interestingly, the decision to bench the 27-year-old signal-caller did not include head coach Daboll and General Manager Joe Schoen, but in fact by the owners and board members collectively.

On Wednesday’s practice, they made Jones the fourth quarterback during individual drills, in order to, avoid the risk of making his injury worse, which can continue into the 2025 season. They gave for this new arrangement to limit the quarterback’s activity.
Based on sources, it appears, that if the Giants had the option to restrict Jones’ participation in practices completely, they likely would have already implemented it since they are obligated to compensate him for $23 million as guaranteed for injury in 2025.
