Gilbert Arenas is one of the most ardent fans of the Los Angeles Lakers as they can come, and he was excited for this season’s hopes with LeBron James and Luka Doncic leading the line.

Right from the offseason, he was among many who had pointed out that the roster was not capable of contending for a championship and needed a good influx of size and physicality to complement the plethora of shooters they had.

No matter how many minutes Doncic, James, and the returning Austin Reaves play, it was not a secret that they could not hold a candle against the best teams in the league.

Keeping this in mind, the expectation was that the Lakers would make some moves before the trade deadline passed. After making one trade, Gilbert Arenas had this to say:

I’m at the restaurant, thinking I’m about to get Wagyu. They traded and gave me Tofu, and I’m supposed to be happy with it? … There’s a bunch of people, in the last 10 years, that got their name on the back of a Laker jersey. They just giving it out. Like it’s a Clipper jersey.

Gilbert Arenas said on Gil’s Arena

The three-time All-Star added that the current Lakers roster already has quite a few players that he wouldn’t mind being cut. On top of that, he was infuriated by Rob Pelinka trading for Luke Kennard, another shooter who averages eight points a game.

Gilbert Arenas scoffs at Luke Kennard’s efficiency

While ranting about the Lakers trading for Luke Kennard, Gil’s Arena host Josiah Johnson added that the guard is shooting at the magical 50/40/90 mark.

You know that only means something if you average enough points. You average five to eight, and you want to throw those stats out there? ‘I shoot 50%, I take two shots.’ Man, get out of here.

Gilbert Arenas replied

Arenas makes a point, as if it were someone who was averaging 15-20 points a game, those efficiency numbers would make a lot of sense.

But Kennard has not touched the eight-point mark this season, which is why the former Washington Wizards star wondered what prompted Rob Pelinka to go after him. Arenas pointed out that there are already a few shooters on the team. It is just that they have not been maximized yet, and now the GM brings in more players who might not move a needle.

The 44-year-old might have a point, as the Lakers are one of the slowest teams in the league and have struggled to keep up with faster and more athletic teams.

Gilbert Arenas would sign Mac McLung to help the lethargic Lakers

Anthony Edwards‘ latest Adidas commercial trolled Luka Doncic and the Lakers’ lack of endurance. It seems he is not the only one who thinks along those lines.

There’s a lot of people in the NBA, right? You couldn’t find nobody that can jump 38-45 inches off the ground? You can pick them off the end of the bench or somewhere. I’ll take Mac McLung… Our team is the most unathletic team in this decade? I don’t know.

Gilbert Arenas said

Even when his colleagues pointed out that the three-time Slam Dunk champion was not much of a shooter, Agent Zero reiterated that the Lakers need more athleticism than anything else.

He believes the team needs some semblance of physicality and athleticism. He believes the Lakers are the slowest team of the past decade. Spending precious draft picks on shooters is not the way to go.
