Gilbert Arenas shares gameplan that could have stopped Stephen Curry against the Mavericks
The NBA Cup tipped off on Tuesday with 16 teams facing off against each other. However, the highlight of the night was certainly the matchup between the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks. The game marked the homecoming of Klay Thompson, which was soon spoiled by the Stephen Curry show at the Chase Center. However, ex-NBA star Gilbert Arenas believes that the Mavericks missed a trick in their game plan to stop Curry.
Throughout Tuesday night, NBA fans were in for a treat when Stephen Curry erupted against the Mavericks with 37 points. However, Gilbert Arenas took to his Gils Arena podcast to talk about a ‘masterplan’ that would have helped the Mavs stop Curry.
Curry started out the game guarding Klay Thompson, where he picked up an early foul just 15 seconds into the game. Arenas believes the Mavs missed an opportunity to win the game from that point on.

Gilbert Arenas revealed that he thinks that the Mavericks should have targeted Stephen Curry on the defensive end after he picked up a quick foul. Arenas brought up ‘old school basketball’ tactics, which would ensure that Curry picks up his second foul soon, forcing the Warriors to bench him.
According to Arenas, the Mavericks should have targeted Stephen Curry on the defensive end by running their offence through Klay Thompson. This would have allowed the Mavs to dominate in the minutes Curry would spend on the bench due to foul trouble.
Stephen Curry and Warriors gear up for NBA Cup amidst Western Conference gauntlet
Klay Thompson touted the matchup between the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks as ‘just a regular season game.’ However, the game meant a lot more as it was the first NBA Cup game for both teams. On the back of Stephen Curry’s 37-point outing, the Warriors bagged their first game in the NBA Cup this season.
However, the team will be looking for a lot more than just their first win. The Warriors failed to make it past the group stage in the NBA Cup in-season tournament last year.
Draymond Green spoke about how the Warriors had ‘bombed’ their first run at the NBA Cup last season and are looking to improve on it this year. However, they will have a tough path if they wish to qualify further for the elimination games.
The Warriors are within Group C in the Western Conference for the NBA Cup. The group is perhaps the most difficult group to qualify from, with all five teams within the group slated as playoff contenders.
The group features the aforementioned Warriors led by Stephen Curry, the Denver Nuggets, the Mavericks, the Grizzlies and the New Orleans Pelicans. The Warriors face off against the Grizzlies for their next NBA Cup game on Friday night.
