Juan Carlos Ferrero is no longer a part of Carlos Alcaraz‘s entourage. They have split to the surprise of the tennis community, as they did not expect the two-time ATP Coach of the Year to part ways with his now ex-protege after a successful season.

Alcaraz worked under the 45-year-old since he was 15, and under him, he not only reached the No.1 ranking but also won six Grand Slam titles. The total titles tally under Ferrero is 24. Apart from the Majors, Alcaraz also clinched eight Masters 1000s.

The tennis world is discussing and debating the possible causes that led to the separation. Daniil Medvedev‘s former coach, Gilles Cervara, understands players’ need for a change, as he also ended his partnership with the former World No.1 this year after working together for eight years. Cervara thinks Alcaraz-Ferrero split could end up being a smart move.

I’ve noticed that these champions are able to sense when they need something different, or more, to keep progressing. And if that’s the case, it’s very smart of Carlos to continue improving.

Gilles Cervara told L’Equipe

This year, Alcaraz won the ATP Player of the Year award thanks to the eight trophies he won from 11 finals. Those titles also include his second US Open title and his second consecutive French Open title. Both of these he won by defeating his arch-rival, Jannik Sinner.

I think—whether it’s the player or the coach, and this is what I experienced with Daniil—that at some point, it’s important to be able to sense it in advance so it’s not too late and to be sure the change is for the right reasons, towards further progress. Now, only time will tell if this decision will hold true. There’s nothing stopping us from thinking he might bring Juan back if he’s winning.

Gilles Cervara added

Apart from the aforementioned trophies, the 22-year-old also took home three Masters 1000s- the Monte Carlo Masters, Italian Open, and the Cincinnati Masters. The Australian Open is around the corner, and Alcaraz will be aiming to complete his Career Grand Slam.

This year, he lost in four sets in the quarterfinals against 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz, in fact, has never progressed beyond the last eight of the Melbourne Major.

Greg Rusedski is ready to coach Carlos Alcaraz

Although Samuel Lopez is a part of Carlos Alcaraz‘s team, the six-time Grand Slam champion is expected to add a new coach to his entourage. Spain’s Davis Cup captain, David Ferrer, and Rafael Nadal‘s former coach, Carlos Moya, are the possible candidates. British former player, Greg Rusedski, during his Off Court with Greg podcast, said that he is ready to join Alcaraz’s team but is convinced that the youngster will only hire Spanish coaches.

If he called me up, I would say yes. But I think he is probably going to go with a Spanish coach. If you look at all the players, De Minaur has a Spanish coach and a Spanish formula. They have been exceptionally successful. Plus the language, plus living in Spain. They want to train at home. But nobody would say no to Carlos if he called you up! If I got the call, I would say yes, but it’s highly unlikely I am going to get that call.

Greg Rusedski said

Alcaraz, upon making his first appearance since the split, apologized to the reporters waiting near his training base, choosing not to answer questions regarding his separation from Juan Carlos Ferrero. Next year, before the Australian Open, Alcaraz will be featuring in an exhibition event in Incheon, South Korea. He will square off against Jannik Sinner.
