English shot-stopper Marcus Bettinelli has joined Chelsea Football Club as a free agent on a two year term until June 2023, the club can confirm.

Bettinelli, been out of contract at Fulham this summer, joins Chelsea and will be adding to their goalkeeping resources following the departure of third choice Argentine goalie Willy Caballero.

Bettinelli started his youth career at Fulham at the tender age of just 14 and rose up the ranks, before making his senior club debut at the start of the 2014/15 season, when Fulham were relegated to the EFL Championship, when he took over as the first choice goalkeeper after the departure of David Stockdale, and garnered 45 games under his name in all competitions.

The 6ft 4in shot-stopper, who assumes a commanding position under the sticks, spent more than a decade at Craven Cottage, as he made 120 appearances for the Whites and has also represented the England U-21 team earlier in his career.

Bettinelli made his Premier League debut in a 4-2 victory against Burnley in August 2018, when Fulham were promoted back to the top flight, also handing him a England senior team call-up by manager Gareth Southgate, though he went without making an appearance.

Marcus Bettinelli will be vying for a spot in the Blues team with current first choice goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, who displayed a terrific performance last season following his transfer to Stamford Bridge, leading them to Champions League triumph in his first season at the club, and record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga, who now mainly features in League cup and FA cup squads.

“It’s always been a special club. I know the area very well so it’s been a dream of mine to come over to this side and it’s finally happened. There were some talks a few years ago when I was a bit younger and for whatever reason that didn’t come about but I’m here now.” said Bettinelli on signing the contract with Chelsea FC.

“I’m really excited to be involved and looking forward to trying to impress and help the team as much as I can.” the English goalkeeper added.
