“I want to be a multiple winner this season”- Tony Finau wins back-to-back PGA Tour titles
Tony Finau
By winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit by five strokes, Tony Finau won his second PGA Tour championship in as many starts. The 32-year-old finished the week on 26 under par and became the first player since Brendon Todd in 2019 to win PGA Tour tournaments on consecutive weeks after combining six birdies and a single bogey on his way to a five-under 67 at Detroit Golf Club. With Germany’s Stephan Jaeger in fifth place, Finau finished five shots ahead of Patrick Cantlay, Cameron Young, and fellow overnight co-leader Taylor Pendrith.
The victory lifts Tony Finau up to seventh in the FedExCup rankings. “One of my goals would be to be a multiple winner on the Tour this season. To be able to accomplish that is great,” Finau said. “Winning the FedExCup is another objective, and I placed myself in a position to achieve that. Scottie Scheffler will be very challenging to catch. Those men, Sam Burns, have had incredible seasons. Cameron Smith, in my opinion, ranks high. Although it will be difficult to catch those players, the FedExCup’s point system allows you to move quickly up the ladder. I’ve at least given myself the opportunity to try.”

Finau made the most of the front-nine par-fives by birdieing the fourth and the seventh. He then followed a 12-foot par-save at the ninth with a 20-footer to gain a stroke at the next hole. After Finau holed out from 30 feet on the following hole to offset a long, three-putt bogey at the previous hole, the American finished off a commanding victory with two-putt birdies on the 14th and 17th holes.
Even though he bogeyed the penultimate hole after making a remarkable eagle at the par-five 14th, Cantlay surged up the leaderboard on the final day with four birdies in the first five holes, leading him to a second consecutive 66. Young finished with a final-round score of 68 and finished on 21 under par, while Pendrith lost his overnight lead with a bogey on the second hole and faded on the back nine. Prior to this week’s Wyndham Championship, the penultimate regular season tournament and final opportunity to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs, England’s Matt Wallace climbed within the top 125 on the FedExCup standings with a top-10 result.
