The name of Phil Mickelson continues to generate buzz around the golfing world. The 53-year-old veteran has come under the spotlight once again recently after Billy Walters revealed his gambling addictions in his book. He now claims that he is confident in Mickelson and thinks the “lefty” did not place bets on the Ryder Cup.

The golf community was left in shock when Walters claimed that Mickelson came to place an audacious bet. The six-time Major champion was reported to be willing to place a $400,000 bet on the Ryder Cup in 2012. This was when he was a part of the US team which lost to Europe.

Walter recently appeared on the No Laying Up podcast. While making an appearance there, he has once again spoken about the LIV golfer. The duo has known each other for a long time and Walters even considered him a friend. He has now expressed his confidence in the HyFlyers captain and thinks he probably came to his senses after their conversation.

I am fairly confident he came to his senses and he probably never made the bet,” Walters said. He further emphasized how he did not say that Mickelson made the bet. “I just said he called me and attempted to make the bet,” Walters was quoted by Golf. According to him, Mickelson might have been carried away at the moment and was perhaps confident of winning it. (H/T: Golf.com)

A friend in need is a friend indeed. Billy Walters, though, found out the opposite meaning of this simple yet effective statement when Phil Mickelson abandoned him. According to his new book “Gambler: Secrets from a Life at Risk,” Walter recalled an incident that involved Mickelson and him, that cost him dearly.

He would consider Mickelson a friend. The duo also spent several hours together wagering on different sports. In 2017, Walter was found guilty of insider trading. He claimed that he got assurance from Mickelson that he would make a statement on his behalf which would help him. However, Mickelson never made any public comment. Walters would later be sentenced to five years.

I would have walked out of court a free man had Phil testified or spoken out on my behalf,” Walters wrote in his book. Speaking on the allegations placed on him, Mickelson denied placing a wager on Ryder Cup. He did mention that he is not shy of admitting the horrors of his gambling addictions.

He was recently blasted by Brandel Chamblee as well. The analyst claimed that he is a ‘greedy person’ and should not be part of the Golf Hall of Fame. So far Mickelson has made no statement regarding the situation with Chamblee.
