The Open Championship is set to kick off on Thursday as excitement among fans reaches a new height. This being the final major of the year, players are eager to etch their names in history books. However, Brandel Chamblee has now suggested a fifth major to be added to the PGA Tour. The golf analyst now wants the Players Championship to be designated as a major.

Chamblee has become famous in the golf community for this take on Golf Channel. Before the whole merger deal, he was at war with LIV Phil Mickelson regarding the existence of the PIF-funded tour. As per him, the league’s action of taking away the top PGA tour players has made the majors more compelling than before.

LIV has managed to poach some compelling players from the PGA Tour and it’s made the major more compelling. I think there should be more sting for defecting away from the PGA Tour,” Chamblee said. He went on add that he cannot think of a much better way than making the Players Championship a major going into the future.

The PGA tour has the power to do that and the players have the power to do that,” Chamblee added. The Players Championship this year was won by Scottie Scheffler. He finished five strokes clear of Tyrell Hatton to win the tournament.

The merger of golf is likely to bring in a few changes to golf in the future. Whether Chamblee’s suggestion will be taken into consideration is something unlikely. At one point he had suggested “six majors” to be played on the tour. Golf is known as a sport of tradition and history. It is highly unlikely that the structure of the four majors will get changed at someone’s suggestion.

The reason why the golf analyst proposed this is unclear. This has though led the fans into debates on social media. Many have suggested some other events to be considered as majors instead of the Players Championship. Here are a few reactions from Twitter in regard to this development.

Currently, golf has four majors in a year. The Masters, PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open are considered the big four events of golf. This year the first three events were won by Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, and Wyndham Clark. All three of them will be in contention for a second major this weekend alongside some of the top players as the Hoylake prepares itself for the Open championship.
