The 2023 Ryder Cup is here. One of the most prestigious tournaments in golf kicked off on Friday, surrounded by a passionate home crowd. Team Europe used the full advantage of this and came out with flying colors. The tempers have also flared as Brooks Koepka took a subtle dig at his rival Jon Rahm during the event.

The rivalry between Rahm and Koepka intensified this year. These two golfers locked horns during the Masters at the Augusta National in April. The LIV star was leading at one point but slipped up which allowed his Spanish counterpart to snatch the green jacket. He has now accused Rahm of acting ‘like a child’.

Team Europe started off strong and managed a clean 4-0 sweep during the foursome matches. Rahm was seen in high spirits and celebrated widely. During this celebration, he hit a signboard on his way to the locker room. Koepka was not happy with this reaction and spoke what was on his mind after seeing that.

I mean I think me and Scottie (Scheffler) birdied, what we say 14, we birdied 14,15,16,17,18 and lost by two,” the five-time major champion said while recalling the play on Day 1. “So yeah, I mean, I want to hit a board and pout just like Jon Rahm did. But, you know, it is what it is. Act like a child. But we’re adults. We move on,” Koepka further added.

Luke Donald defends Jon Rahm after harsh criticism by Brooks Koepka

The pressure of the Ryder Cup is certainly on the captains. Zach Johnson and Luke Donald both have their work cut out for them. While they might not be playing at the event, their leadership is important for the team’s success. Donald did just that on Friday after he defended Jon Rahm for his celebration and supported him from the harsh criticism of Brooks Koepka.

I didn’t see any of that. Jon was a big support system for Nicolai today,” the captain said before adding “Jon’s a passionate person, but I couldn’t imagine him any other way.” The 45-year-old Englishman later expressed it was hard to believe the start his team produced but warned the others not to get carried away.

After the brilliant start at the foursome matches, the host continued to apply the pressure during the four-ball event. At the end of the day, Team Europe notched up a commanding score of 6.5, showing off their dominating display. Team USA on the other hand got up the board and is currently 5 points behind at 1.5. They will need a stellar performance from here on to turn things around in their favor.
