As the Ryder Cup starts to take center stage on Friday, the drama has already started. This year, the tournament will feature some faces as many former players failed to qualify. A major reason for this was because of their moves to the LIV Golf. The only representative from the Saudi-funded tour, Brooks Koepka has now made a critical comment regarding his league mates.
The qualification process for the teams required players to gather a certain amount of points from PGA Tour events. Unlike the other 11 members of his team, Koepka only appeared in four events of the PGA circuit – the four majors. This gave the other LIV Golfers a hard chance to accumulate points as everyone needed to ensure a top-ten finish. Despite winning the PGA Championship and finishing runner-up at the Masters, Koepka fell out of the top six automatic qualification places but was selected as a captain’s pick.
Recently Bryson DeChambeau called out captain USA captain Zach Johnson following his triumph at LIV Chicago. During that, the golfer said that Johnson could have called numerous people from the LIV league if he wanted them. He along with Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed were the notable absentees from the 40-year-old picks.
“I don’t make the decisions. It doesn’t… everybody had an opportunity to get there. I mean I had the same opportunity as every other LIV player, and I’m here,” the five-time major champion said. He further gave a critical advice “Player better. That’s always the answer.”
Brooks Koepka gives sharp answer to a question at Ryder Cup press conference
The stakes are obviously high for the Ryder Cup this year. Not only is this tournament to bring home a prestigious trophy, but it is also a chance to prove their regional dominance. Brooks Koepka and his team will enter the course on Friday as the defending champions. He has now given a sharp verdict on the players participating while answering a tough question.
During the press conference, Koepka was asked by a reporter what if the tournament came down to one match and all 24 (12 on each team) said they would take the ball, how many did he think would actually mean that? This left the LIV Golfer stunned for a moment. He would take a few moments of pause and say “very few” before adding “false confidence, I think.”
Koepka would also state that he does want to face Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, and Viktor Hovland but later expressed he is happy to go up against anyone. “Some guys want to certain people. I would love to play Jon, Rory, and Vik. I’ll play anybody,” he added.
This also comes at a time when US Open winner Wyndham Clark issued a challenge to McIlory. The duo went head-to-head during the third major which eventually saw Clark finish one-stroke ahead of him. A Masters rematch between Rahm and Koepka could be a spicy one as the LIV golfer slipped up late to allow his rival to claim the green jacket in April. Who will face who will be decided on Friday?
