The controversial PGA-LIV merger has been un-relentlessly stirring waves in the world of golf and in social media. While some celebrate the merger, there are also players who’d rather stick with their current tour. LIV Golfers Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson are unwilling to go back to PGA following the merger.
The merger molded a road back for the PGA defectors to join the Tour and be able to participate in its official tournaments. While this alone may be celebratory for some, DJ and Koepka have different thoughts on it. They stated they are happy playing less golf in a year than overdosing on schedule like in the past.
Furthermore, DJ stated that he’s “excited for the future” as this PIF agreement will boost LIV to higher levels. “I’m happy exactly where I am, and I’m definitely not looking to play more golf than playing now, that’s for sure.”
Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson decide to stay with LIV despite chance to go back to PGA Tour
As of now details regarding the PIF agreement are not revealed, although the framework has been released and submitted to the U.S. Senate for further investigations. Even though LIV players are allowed back in the Tour, they’ll have to pay fines or go through a suspension.
Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson were among the big names who left PGA in 2022. Johnson made it clear that he has no intention to return to the Tour even if given the chance, while Koepka for now, will like to keep his options open.
“It’s tough to look into the future…but I know I’m happy where I’m at right now, and just take it one day at a time.” Both of them also agreed that in terms of the LIV schedule, they get better preparation for The Masters. They are happy with the little refreshing breaks they get in between the events and will like to keep the tension like that.
DJ said, “The schedule has been pretty good. We’ve had some breaks. There’s been some stretches where we’ve played a lot, but we’ve also had some nice breaks, too.” His wife Paulina Gretzky has also been quite supportive of his decisions both on personal and social levels.
Till now not all players have voiced on the merger deal. Everyone in the golf world is waiting to hear from Tiger Woods as he’s been a force for PGA in the LIV lawsuit. He’s been absent from the greens due to rehabilitation and is expected to make his return in one of the six TGL golf teams in 2024.
Fans will have to wait for his answer regarding the current sports scenario. While Woods may make his return next year, blockbuster golf tournaments have been scheduled one after another for 2023. How the merger will play its role amidst the ongoing controversies will be interesting to watch out for.
Just like Koepka and DJ, other players may also come forward regarding their stance on their current tour. It’ll be interesting to see how the other golfers will take the merger and mold its form. As of now, both Americans are satisfied with the current flow.
