The LIV Golf Series has caused its fair share of controversy over the last couple of months. It has disrupted the golf world to say the least, adding tension, drama and never-ending rivalries between golfers, fans and Tours alike. While many big names have stayed loyal to the PGA TOUR- including the likes of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy- others have made the shift the the Saudi backed series.
This includes names like Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka– all who were known to be stars on the tour. With its fresh new format of golf, the LIV Series aims to create a new type of competition. Changes include 54 hole format without any cuts, and team style play. All of which is new to the traditions of golf.
While all this has been happening, LIV Golf players have been receiving a lot of backlash. However, recently Bryson DeChambeau spoke about why he enjoys LIV Golf, and how the new format provides him with a fresh mind of play. “Today I’ll tell you out there I was fighting like I was playing for an individual title. Just the way it feels out there when you are competing for your guys,” said DeChambeau, talking about the team spirit in LIV golf.

“And so every shot mattered. It didn’t matter where I was, what position I was in for the individual title. It was how can I make birdie on this hole. What can I do to make birdie?” said DeChambeau. The second season of LIV Golf has begun with a bang, as new players from the PGA Tour defect to the LIV Series. The very first event of the season was a Mayakoba, and it was quite a memorable one.
“That was my goal for today, and I was proud that these guys pulled it out and we all counted, which is great. Hopefully we can count a couple of more times. But look it doesn’t matter, it’s a team deal. So, we got the dub and we’re going to get more this year.” For DeChambeau, he is excited about how the rest of the year is going to go.
Charles Howell III took the win at Mayakoba, Mexico in a clean performance. The course is to be a hard one, and its unpredictable nature means that anything can happen. For Howell, it was victory with a prize payout of over $4 million. A part of the Crushers GC team led by DeChambeau, Howell and co. is ready to take on the challenge for the remainder of the year.
“I knew it would happen, I just didn’t know when,” DeChambeau said of the win. “To start off the year with a crushing victory, how much more can you ask for a statement piece? The 4Aces, they won a lot last year – but it’s a different year,” said DeChambeau, satisfied with himself and the direction his team is taking.
