American golfer Bubba Watson recently joined the list of players moving to the controversial Saudi-backed LIV Golf. This took place on the occasion of the third event of the tournament, held at the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster last week.

The event ended with the victory of Henrik Stenson in the individual classification and of Team 4Aces GC in the team classification. The Greg Norman-led League managed to secure the services of the Baghdad native Watson for a $ 50 million ticket reportedly.

“When I think of the atmosphere inside Team USA during the 2016 Ryder Cup, it occurs to me that I was number seven in the world at the time, but I was an Assistant Captain, and that was fun for me,” Bubba said. “I enjoyed it more than playing. For me, to transfer my knowledge, to encourage, to help the team grow, to help it improve by trying to win tournaments.”

“Trying to make golf grow as a whole”

Notably, the 12-time Tour champion Watson will not be back on the field before next year due to the knee injury that took him away from tournaments immediately after the PGA Championship. However, the move by the LIV seems mainly targeted at raising the level of the participating golfers (Watson being the eleventh Major champion joining the rebel League).

He added: “In the end, trying to make golf grow as a whole is an obvious choice. Having people on your team (at LIV events) takes away the exclusive connotation of individual sport from golf.

“Here there are people with whom to share new ideas. There is a nice atmosphere, and everyone who talked to me about the Tour (LIV, NDR) said that it is incredible and that they are enthusiastic about their choice.”
