While the focus of many golf fans was turned toward the FedEx St Jude Championship, the action did not just stop there. PGA Tour’s rival league, the LIV Golf held their own event – the LIV Bedminster this weekend. The tournament saw two-time LIV golf event winner and Rippers GC captain Cameron Smith claim his third victory on the Saudi-funded tour.
For the past two months, the future of LIV Golf has been the talking point. The merger with the PGA Tour has raised some uncertainty regarding its existence. This though has not stopped the breakaway league from continuing their operations. Following his victory at the LIV London in July, Smith has now collected the winner’s cheque on the circuit.
Smith was once again impressive from the start and was well and truly on pace for another title. The 2022 Open Championship winner saw some resistance from veteran Phil Mickelson in the second round. However, the lefty was unable to repeat this on the final day and fired two shots into the water, derailing his challenge for the title.
The 29-year-old Australian finished the event 12-under par, seven shots ahead of runner Anirban Lahiri. “That was a good day. I am looking forward to a couple of weeks with the clubs down,” Smith said after his win. This win also moved him top of the LIV season points, overtaking Talor Gooch.
Cameron Smith and Rippers GC claim first team title after dominating display
Ever since its formation two years ago, LIV Golf has been criticized for its style of play. The normal events feature players competing as individuals and teams on a three-round no-cuts rule. Despite this, the LIV had boosted their culture. Sunday’ win for Cameron Smith was his third individual win. His celebrations were later doubled as his side, Rippers GC won the team event, finishing 11 strokes ahead of Crushers GC.
“Just the satisfaction of being able to celebrate a win with some of your best mates in the world,” Marc Leishman said. The Aussie mentioned how they got close in London as a team and explained the impact of LIV Golf on their lives. “To celebrate on the 18th green an individual victory, a team victory, eight happy blokes – caddies, teams, everything – it was more than that. That’s what LIV Golf is all about,” he further added.
The next LIV Golf event will now take place more than a month later. The players and teams will head to Chicago to take on the final three events remaining in the current schedule. Smith who won the event last year will be looking to make it back-to-back wins and defend his title. The event will take place on September 22 and conclude on September 24.
