“It’s over if no offer in hand” – Charles Barkley sets deadline for LIV Golf offer

“It’s over if no offer in hand” – Charles Barkley sets deadline for LIV Golf offer

Charles Barkley

According to Charles Barkley, who has been open about his discussions with the Saudi-sponsored golf league, LIV Golf needs to make an offer to him this week or he’s out. He said as much on the “Dan Patrick Show” on Monday. Barkley said, “I’m gonna give them a deadline. The deadline is gonna be Thursday. I’m playing at the Pro-Am Thursday … I’m not gonna keep TNT in limbo.

He continued, “I don’t think it’s fair to them. They’ve got plenty of play out of me coming to play out there Thursday. I’m not just gonna be a no-show pony. Don’t be wasting my time. I’m not gonna waste y’all time. When I leave New Jersey Thursday night, when I leave the golf course, if I don’t have an offer, it’s over.” When asked by Patrick whether he knows when Greg Norman, the face of LIV Golf, will respond.

In addition, Barkley talked about the kind of payment he would need to make. “Somebody said Phil Mickelson got $200 million. You take that money. Somebody said Dustin Johnson got $150 million, and Bryson [DeChambeau] and Brooks [Koepka] $150 million to play golf 15 times a year, I have no problem with them taking that money. And if they offer me something crazy, I’m gonna take it too,” Barkley said.

What would be a “crazy number?” wondered Patrick. Barkley at first opted not to disclose his income. In the past week, Barkley revealed to The Post’s Andrew Marchand that he earns $10 million as a TNT NBA analyst. Barkley deemed Patrick’s estimate of $20 million between salary and endorsements to be accurate.

Barkley leaving TNT with three years left on his contract would be “very implausible,” according to Marchand, who wrote about it in his “Sports Clicker” email on Monday. He stated that getting a new deal from TNT with a wage raise or doing both jobs were the more likely outcomes.

Barkley claimed that it would cost a lot of money to “give up my life right now,” seemingly acknowledging that he would lose some endorsements or public favor if he aligns himself with the Saudi government. What if LIV Golf increased more than $20 million and gave him $60 million annually? “If they triple it, your first question should be, ‘Charles, where we celebrating tonight?’” answered Barkley.
