“Understand their feelings” Donald Trump dodges questions about Saudi-sponsored golf tournament at his NJ property

There is growing pressure on former US president Donald Trump to cancel the tournament from coalitions of the families of those killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. On Friday, Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, will play host to the third event for LIV Golf, funded by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign-wealth fund.
In a Monday interview with the Wall street journal, former president Donald Trump said he can “understand the feelings” but doesn’t understand the protests by the bereaved families of 9/11 victims against the lavish, Saudi-sponsored LIV Golf Invitational, which will soon be held at one of his golf courses.
“I don’t know much about the 9/11 families, I don’t know what is the relationship to this, and their very strong feelings, and I can understand their feelings,” Trump told The Wall Street Journal. “I can’t really comment on that because I don’t know exactly what they’re saying, and what they’re saying who did what.”

9/11 Justice, one of the family coalitions, on Tuesday unveiled a commercial that used pictures of Trump‘s Bedminster golf course and questioned the former president’s plans to host the high-profile sporting event. “This golf tournament is taking place 50 miles from Ground Zero,” a man in the ad noted. “It’s disgusting. Worse than a slap in the face,” said another. “How much money to turn your back on your own country?” a woman asked.
Just down the road from the Bedminster golf club, “9/11 Justice” plans to organize a demonstration at the beginning of the three-day competition on Friday. On Tuesday, a different coalition called “9/11 Families United” staged a press conference close to the Bedminster club.
Wounded Families have criticized Saudi Arabia for its involvement in the 9/11 attacks—the majority of the attackers were Saudi nationals, but the Saudi government has consistently denied any involvement—only for the nation to now partake in “sports washing,” a modern trend that detractors refer to as the cleaning up of a country’s reputation through participation in high-profile sporting events. Later this year, another LIV event will take place at Trump National Doral Miami.
