LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed circuit, has been constantly in the headlines ever since the announcement of this controversial tournament rolled out. Meanwhile, former US president Donald Trump, who has a history of supporting rebel sports ventures, has shared his remarks about the league in the media.

Trump’s comments came the week that his course, Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., is set to host the third event for LIV Golf. “I think LIV has been a great thing for Saudi Arabia, for the image of Saudi Arabia,” he said. “I think it’s going to be an incredible investment from that standpoint, and that’s more valuable than lots of other things because you can’t buy that—even with billions of dollars.”

The Republican Party leader also said he thinks that controversy around the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi—often cited about Saudi Arabia’s record on human rights—has “totally died down.”

“I do think that the publicity that they’ve gotten, more than anything, has been a great thing for them,” Mr Trump said. “I think the publicity they’ve gotten is worth billions of dollars. It’s one of the hottest things to have happened in sports, and sports is a big part of life.”
