For the first time in 13 years, Dustin Johnson, who is a two-time major champion, has slipped out of the top 50 on the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Presently, he is placed at the 51st position, below fellow American golfer J.T. Poston.
Dustin Johnson was among the early players to enlist in the LIV Golf League. However, his current position is likely to trigger more demands for LIV players to be included in the ranking. Despite being in the top spot for 135 weeks in the past, he has now dropped below the top 50, reaching the lowest ranking he has had since January 2010.
While the issue is likely to be contentious, it is clear that the emergence of new leagues is changing the landscape of professional golf and providing fans with new and exciting ways to enjoy the sport.

Two-time major champion suffers rankings blow as new season approaches
Despite his drop in the rankings, Johnson has been competitive since his switch to LIV, winning once (in Boston) and finishing in the top eight in five other events on the Saudi-funded circuit. However, his current position is likely to intensify calls for the ranking to include LIV players.
Last month, it was revealed that PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and his DP World Tour counterpart Keith Pelley had recused themselves from voting on the LIV application. This suggests that there may be some resistance to the inclusion of LIV players in the OWGR rankings.
The emergence of new golf leagues like LIV has complicated the debate over OWGR. High-profile players like Johnson, Koepka, and Mickelson have joined LIV for its big prize money and unique format.
However, the OWGR only acknowledges players from officially sanctioned events, including the PGA, European and Asian Tours. This has prompted suggestions to add players from emerging leagues like LIV and PGL to make the rankings more inclusive and reflective of the sport’s current landscape.
The absence of LIV Golf League and other emerging leagues in the OWGR rankings may disappoint players such as Dustin Johnson. Nonetheless, rankings are only one criterion for success. The prosperity of these leagues will be determined by their ability to lure elite players and offer exciting gameplay for enthusiasts.
